We are pleased to announce this year's original musical, Have A Hart!, a celebration of the genius of Larry Hart, of the famous songwriting team of Rodgers and Hart. This show is in the tradition of the other Great American Songbook shows we have presented at the Pewter Plough, devoted to Cole Porter, Noel Coward, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer and, last year, Harold Arlen.
American composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Lorenz (Larry) Hart were one of America's most successful songwriting teams during the Golden Age of Musical Theatre, producing an astonishing array of lasting songs. Our show is putting the focus on Hart, who wrote some of the best lyrics ever for Broadway, in the words of Irving Berlin, "the first of the truly sophisticated lyric writers."
Hart was pivotal in changing the craft of popular song lyric writing from tired cliches and cloying sentimentality to surprisingly realistic phrases and subject matter, full of dazzling wit, poetic cleverness and tender sincerity. Hart's songs are undeniably energetic, modern, personal, emotionally potent, worldly and world-weary!
Rodgers would eventually become better known for his second collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein (a team we have also celebrated), but many have a preference for the inner sensitivity and originality of the Rodgers and Hart songs, which have long been favorites of cabaret singers and jazz artists, and speak to our age and times.
Some of the fabulous songs included in the show are: Blue Moon, Isn't It Romantic?, Bewitched (Bothered and Bewildered), Manhattan, Johnny One Note, This Can't Be Love, Thou Swell, I Didn't Know What Time It Was, The Lady Is A Tramp, and My Funny Valentine — over 40 songs in the show!
Performers include Wayne Attoe, Laurelle Barnett, Jim Conroy, Viv Goff and David Manion at the piano. Production Manager is Viv Goff.
