The Pewter Plough Playhouse presented a Cambria premiere of the radio play version of the classic motion picture It's a Wonderful Life.
Rick Auricchio and Jim Ragan. |
The cast featured Brian Sheridan as George Bailey, who is given a great gift on Christmas Eve by his guardian angel, Clarence (played by Rob Maston). Others in the cast are Barbara Kowalska (Mary Bailey), Anita Schwaber, Jim Ragan, Art Van Rhyn, Leon Max Danell, Rick Auricchio, and Sharon Woodside-Hanish (as the sound technician.)

The orginal screenplay was based on the short story "The Greatest Gift" by Philip Van Doren Stern. Stern adapted his story for the screen along with Frances Goodrich & Albert Hackett, Frank Capra, Jo Swerling, and Michael Wilson.

This version was broadcast in March, 1947, shortly after the film was released to theaters. Back in the Thirties and Forties, when movie stars finished shooting a film, they would go into the sound studio to recreate the entire production for the Lux Radio Theatre. These "movies for the ears" were as entertaining as their screen counterparts, using music and sound effects to create a version of the film.

Special thanks are in order to Sharon Woodside-Hanish, for her uncanny ability to find just the right costume pieces. Sharon also reconfigured the sound equipment, decorated our stage, and plied the cast with coffee, baked treats, and bottled Coke for authenticity.
